Emulsifying cleansing balm DIY
Skin tends to be unhappy in deep winter. Very. Blemishes and oily patches call for even thicker makeup layers which result in clogged pores, even more patches and that never-quite-clean feeling skin. Being a creature of habit, most of us still use a soap based cleanser to get rid of makeup before proceeding with the PM skincare routine. This DIY will help you make a nourishing and balancing cleansing balm, specifically formulated to combat the problems of winter skin. This formula creates a semi-solid, emulsifying balm which will lift dirt from your pores and leave your skin hydrated without stripping it from its natural oil layer.
But first, let's talk oil cleansers. A lot of oil cleansers on the market don't actually free pores from dirt but merely melt makeup which you then have to take off with a wash or muslin cloth. Annoying! But because this formula emulsifies, it will unclog your pores and wash off your makeup without the help of a cleansing cloth. Win win!
It's best applied on wet skin over makeup, as it will lather when it comes in contact with water. This balm is also excellent to take on travels. Use it especially after (or even during!) long haul flights which really drain your skin of moisture.
In this formulation, shea nut butter acts as a natural emollient that locks moisture in and provides deep nourishment for dry winter skin. Additionally, a mix of light but moisturising sweet almond, Watermelon and marula oils will help re-balance combination skin and fight impurities as well as signs of ageing. A dash of sweet almond wax helps to protect and nourish skin and leaves it with a healthy, dewy glow. There is a dash of coconut oil added to this formula which is a natural emulsifier and will leave skin well hydrated. Some olive derived, natural emulsifying wax will help the formula to lather when it comes in contact with water.
As to essential oils, deliciously scented frangipani is added to moisturise and promote skin healing and clary sage will help to get over that winter low. Orange essential oil is added to detoxify and revitalise.
INGREDIENTS for 30ml
7.5 Natural Emulsifying Wax (get it here)
7 g Watermelon Seed Oil (get it here)
3.5 g Sweet Almond Oil (get it here)
3.5 g Marula Oil (get it here)
3 g Coconut Oil (get it here)
3.5 g Shea Nut Butter (get it here)
2 g Sweet Almond Wax (get it here)
2 g Vegetable Glycerine (get it here)
1 ml Vitamin E (get it here)
5 drops Frangipani Essential Oil
2 drops Clary Sage Essential Oil
3 drops Orange Essential Oil
Cream jar (get it here)
Heat all ingredients, apart from vegetable glycerine, vitamin E and essential oils, in a bain-marie until the wax and butter have melted. Remove from the heat. Add the essential oils, vegetable glycerine and vitamin E as the mix begins to cool. Pour into a sterilised jar (we use Milton’s Sterilising Fluid to sterilise my containers) and leave to cool for 1 hour. This is when the mixture will start to solidify, so don’t worry if it’s too liquid at first, it will develop into a more solid mixture over time!
HOW TO APPLY
To apply, scoop a coin sized amount onto your finger tips and rub over wet face in circular movements until it begins to lather. Wash off with warm water. The balm will have melted away your makeup, leaving skin well hydrated and dewy and without stripping off the skin’s natural sebum layer.
