Simple coconut & ylang-ylang body melt DIY
This gorgeous coconut - argan - ylang-ylang melt resulted out of curiosity and, mostly, trial and error. Making a cream or lotion and to achieve that thick creamy texture involves a lot of cooking, measuring and immersing into scientific processes. Well, whilst cooking with coconut oil that has a beautiful, creamy texture we discovered: if you mix it up with some carrier oils and create the resulting texture will be thick enough to spread comfortably.
Coconut oil is one of our favourite natural moisturisers of all times, it has been used for centuries to hydrate skin and hair as it contains a high concentration of medium-chain saturated fatty acids which retain the moisture content of the skin and make skin smooth to the touch. Coconut oil also contains vitamin E which ensures healthy skin growth, prevents premature ageing and has excellent antioxidant properties. Plus, it contains a number of proteins which keep skin healthy and rejuvenated.
After a lot of experimentation, this formulation resulted which provides the right texture for your melt whilst, additionally to coconut oil, using other carrier oils and essential oils for that extra bit of skin nourishment and delicious tropical scent.
INGREDIENTS for 100ml
2 tbsp Refined (or Virgin if you prefer) Coconut Oil
1 tbsp Sweet Almond Oil
1 tsp Argan Oil
3 drops Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil
2 drops Orange Essential Oil
2 Drops Bergamot Essential Oil
1 drop Vitamin E
(Note: Coconut is already rich on vitamin E, but I have added it in
anyway to ensure a longer shelf life for the melt)
If you'd like to go extra organic, you can use unrefined, virgin coconut oil instead of refined coconut oil as it has even better natural properties. Refined coconut oil has less odour so is typically used in beauty formulations. It's really up to you, but if you don't mind a distinctively coconutey scent - go for the unrefined, virgin coconut oil - it's a goodie!
Measure your oils with a measuring spoon, put the coconut oil, sweet almond oil and argan oil into a mixing bowl and whisk them up into an even, creamy texture. Add the vitamin E and essential oils, and mix well. Pour the melt into the sterilised bottle and place the lid on. The melt should keep for 3 months and up, especially if you store it in the fridge.
The resulting melt is xtra nourishing but at the same time quickly absorbent and the delicious smell of coconut and ylang-ylang makes you want to go on holiday! Speaking of which, coconut Oil is also a natural sun blocker and has an SPF of 4, so can protect from minor sun exposure.
Hopefully you enjoy this DIY. As always, feel free to leave your feedback or suggestions!
